About Babel Bear
What exactly IS Babel Bear? Babel Bear is a free and open wiki that allows anyone to add subtitles to YouTube videos. The goal is to make it as easy as possible to allow anyone to subtitle Internet videos. There is no need for additional software. We also have a request system for videos that don't already have subtitles in your language. Is it FREE? Yes! What happens when you request a language? When you request a language, you are asking someone to create subtitles in the language you requested. This request will show up in your profile page under "Subtitles I'm Waiting For". When someone completes your request, it will be ready for you to watch under "Subtitles Created For Me". Who can subtitle? Anyone can add a subtitle track to any video online. You don't have to be the owner of the video to add subtitles. What do I need to get started? Nothing! Everything you need is right here. Traditionally, if you wanted to subtitle a video you had to download the video, find a decent subtitle editor, create the subtitles, re-export the video and then finally reupload the video. Ugh. With Babel Bear, you find your video and click "subtitle". When you're done, you hit "publish". How easy was that? What languages are supported? At the moment, we have support for Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Farsi, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Maltese, Portuguese-Brazil, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. We will be continually expanding this list. I can't view certain subtitles. Depending on your operating system, you will need to download the appropriate language pack to support its characters. Does Babel Bear support my .SRT files? We have plans to allow you to import preexisting subtitles in the future, but at this moment you can't. I've got ideas for the website/a bug to report. Great!
